The reverse of this popular type illustrates the timeless adage that a dog is man’s best friend. While Ulysses wandered the seas after the fall of Troy, enduring trials at the hands of the gods, his loyal dog Argus remained behind, guarding home and hearth. The scene on this coin depicts Ulysses’ long-awaited return after twenty years. Disguised in order to confront the suitors vying for his wife, he is nonetheless recognized by Argus, who raises a commotion in joyous recognition. Ulysses gently acknowledges his faithful companion, who, content at having seen his master once more, lies down and dies.
